Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
The papers presented here draw on data from the Midwest longitudinal study that was begun in 1986. This prospective cohorts design study originally focused on the "cycle of violence" and was broadened in scope to include assessments of multiple domains of functioning across many waves of the study. A large group of children with documented histories of physical and sexual abuse and neglect and demographically matched controls without those histories were followed up and assessed over time from young to middle adulthood. These three papers will focus on topics of contemporary importance, including homelessness, traumatic brain injury, and the role of adult cognitive appraisals of childhood experiences. Each paper will examine the extent to which childhood maltreatment increases risk for these particular outcomes and the role of potential mediating factors. Implications of the findings will be discussed.
