Growing Up With Guns: Findings from a Nationally Representative Survey of Youth and Young Adults

Fri, Nov 15, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Salon 13 - Lower B2 Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Firearms are the second leading cause of death among youth and adolescents. Understanding the range of youth exposure to gun violence is of critical importance. The Growing Up With Guns (GWG) Study is a longitudinal survey of U.S. youth and young adults ages 10-34 on indirect and direct exposure to firearm violence using the AmeriSpeak panel. Based on the first wave of data, we will present findings from 5,311 youth and young adults. First, we will present past year and lifetime prevalence of firearm violence victimization, perpetration, and thoughts of self-harm. Next, we will describe characteristics of gun carrying and examine the effects of individual forms of victimization and poly-victimization on gun carrying, separately for male and females. Lastly, we will present findings on the co-occurrence profiles of forms of exposure. Educators and policymakers may build on these results, in aggregate and for subgroups, to develop prevention interventions.
