Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
In 2023, the state of Texas passed a law requiring armed personnel in every school. To comply with this new mandate, schools have the following options: 1) Commissioned Peace Officer, 2) School Marshall, 3) Private Security, or 4) a non-active law enforcement "Guardian" ("a school district employee or person with whom the district contracts"). While the first three options have specific trainings and requirements associated with their positions, the guardian's sole requirement is that the individual complete certified school safety training. The researchers in this panel are examining the training, roles, and expectations of the guardians, as indicated by school districts and police departments.
