This panel highlights innovative research being done in the field of human trafficking on the role of public opinion and legal responses. First, this panel will highlight recent public opinion research on abortion criminalization and its relation to trafficking. Second, public perceptions on the culpability of child sex trafficking survivors will be discussed. Third, this panel highlights novel research examining court data on victim compensation outcomes. The importance of victim characteristics and perceptions of being an “iconic victim” in legal decisions will be reviewed. Fourth, data from youth involved in the justice system will be examined to determine the validity of the Human Trafficking Screening Tool in a state-wide assessment.
