Exploring Conceptualizations of Safety: Gender, Stigma, and Public Discourses

Wed, Nov 13, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Nob Hill B - Lower B2 Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

This panel delves into how people think about and experience safety. The first panel examines news media’s portrayal of violent crime and safety and identifies discordance between narratives around causes and proposed solutions for rising rates of violence. In the second paper, generational differences in women’s sense of safety and strategies for risk management are explored. The third paper shifts the focus to individuals impacted by the criminal legal system, examining how they conceptualize safety and highlighting the need to center their voices. The final paper investigates people’s experiences of stigmatized places, uncovering the historical inequalities and coping strategies employed by residents. Collectively, the papers offer nuanced insights into differences in experiences with safety and the factors that shape them.
