Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
Successful community based crime prevention interventions depend on private citizens to effectively respond to crime and disorder in ways that benefit the broader community. Yet research on the factors that influence the crime prevention actions of the ordinary citizen is limited and studies have not considered how the dynamics of time and place encourage individuals' responses to crime. The Perceptions and Experiences of Place (PEP) project used a bespoke mobile phone application and collected cross sectional survey data, ecological momentary assessments and locational trace data. This thematic panel presents four papers emerging from the project that examine the spatial and temporal contexts of place familiarity, collective efficacy, and perceptions of risk. The panel reveals the potential of emerging forms of data to better understand crime and place.
