Redesigning public safety at the Center for Policing Equity involves analyzing traditional police responses and identifying spaces in which police are not the best responders to the problem being solved.
While a good starting point for analysis, we have often found traditional police administrative data to be unreliable on many levels. This is data that historically is not meant to be analyzed scientifically, and it generally suffers from a great deal of missingness, errors, failures of interlinkability, and data infrastructure gaps.
One solution is to examine these issues from a mixed methods perspective, adding qualitative data to existing quantitative knowledge to form a more complete picture of police response and alternative response evaluations.
This panel of researchers will describe their experience in this applied field of collecting quantitative and qualitative data, analyzing that data and working with our partners to implement solutions
