Session Submission Summary

Emerging Issues and Innovative Methods in Pretrial Justice

Wed, Nov 13, 8:00 to 9:20am, Salon 12 - Lower B2 Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

Our understanding of pretrial justice operations and the impact of various pretrial practices has grown tremendously over recent decades. Unanswered questions, however, remain about the impact of various pretrial release conditions on clients’ likelihood of appearing in court and under what contexts such these pretrial decisions are negotiated and rationalized. Aside from pretrial release conditions themselves, scholars have also begun to unpack the influence of a variety of structural barriers to appearing in court, such as lack of reliable transportation. Ongoing discussions of pretrial justice also include how the presumption of innocence can be balanced in the presence of pretrial detention. Showcasing work from multiple agencies across the country, this panel will provide a diverse overview to emerging issues and the applicability of innovative methods in pretrial justice.
