Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel
This panel investigates various approaches to school discipline in the 21st century, including exclusionary discipline, corporal punishment, law enforcement contact, and various security and safety measures. The school discipline and safety literature highlights the importance of context when investigating punishment outcomes, including but not limited to the community and political climate. Together, these studies reiterate how approaches to school discipline have increasingly relied on heightened surveillance practices and control of students, with some school contexts providing more protective aspects and equity than others.
