Police Violence 10 Years After Ferguson: What Do We Know and Where Do We Go Next?

Fri, Nov 15, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Nob Hill D - Lower B2 Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

On August 9, 2014, St. Louis police shot and killed Michael Brown, an unarmed Black teenager. The tragic killing birthed a social movement calling for accountability, transparency, and reimagining of US policing. In 2015, following in the footsteps of other crowd-sourced databases, Campaign Zero launched Mapping Police Violence (MPV). Given the challenges and continued gaps in federal reporting, the necessity for comprehensive tracking and analysis of police violence has become increasingly evident. This panel presents a multifaceted exploration of police violence in the United States over the last decade, utilizing the Mapping Police Violence (MPV) database as a foundational resource. Our objective is threefold: to delve into the innovative data generation process, examine the macro-level changes in police violence, and identify targeted interventions to reduce harm.
