Session Submission Summary

Consuming Carcerality: The Ethics, Tourism, and Pop Cultural Commodification of Carceral Spaces

Fri, Nov 15, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Sierra B - 5th Level

Session Submission Type: Complete Thematic Panel

Abstract/Description

This thematic panel brings together personal experiences, theoretical empiricism, and diverse criminological conversations to explore the complex and charged phenomenon of consuming carcerality. Through listings of former carceral spaces as residential real estate, analyses of entities that offer carceral “experiences,” and examinations of pop cultural trends that trivialize the violence of incarceration, we discuss the ethics and carceral logics that inform if, how, and when we consume carcerality.
