Session Submission Type: Presidential Session
This panel explores strategies for teaching pressing social issues in our disciplines including hate crimes, immigration, gun control, gender equality, and mass incarceration. Through insights from the graduate student panelists, we explore the need for (1) training instructors to respond to undergraduate students’ concerns, questions, and ideas about current social issues; (2) fostering collaborative learning environments around divisive topics; and (3) preparing future faculty for the realities of teaching during trying times.
This panel highlights the development of a Pedagogical Certificate Program aimed at leveraging existing campus resources and creating new teaching tools to adequately prepare graduate students to be inclusive, culturally responsive, and contemplative educators. This panel showcases how the selected Ph.D. cohort designed pedagogical workshops to address subject area and pedagogical gaps, with a focus on sharing these resources through a digital archive for wider dissemination among educators in our disciplines.
