Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
Teaching college in prison has boomed since the Federal Government made Pell Grants available to all incarcerated individuals in July of 2023. More and more colleges and universities are offering college programs in prisons across the country. To get a better idea of what prison instructors face, this Roundtable features presentations by faculty who already teach in prison. The Chair, Dr. Gary Kowaluk, will discuss student prisoner reactions to his presentation on the Pirandellian Prison of the Mind in his Introduction to Sociology class, Dr. Denise Woodall will present on Empowerment Beyond Bars: Transforming a Social Psychology course into Policy Advocacy for Women Lifers," while Lucas Alan Dietsche will present on teaching remote classes to prisoners." Dr. Jessica Bird will discuss teaching her class on Moral Emotions and Justice at the Cook County Jail, and Dr. Truth Akins will present on teaching Administration of Justice at California Department of Corrections.
Jessica Bird, University of Illinois Chicago
Denise Ruth Woodall, University of North Georgia
Truth Thelma Akins, Cerro Coso Community College
Lucas Alan Dietsche, Institute for Doctoral Studies for Visual Arts
Organized by the Division of Convict Criminology.
