Carceral sensitivity is the empathetic and informed understanding of the experiences and needs of individuals impacted by the criminal justice system, encompassing recognition of their unique challenges and a commitment to addressing systemic injustices. Carceral sensitivity also involves acknowledging and navigating the potential biases and challenges that practitioners, researchers, and others may encounter when working with formerly incarcerated individuals, including issues of trust, stigma, and power dynamics. By fostering open dialogue and reflection on these issues, practitioners can better uphold the principles of humanity and respect in their interactions with justice-involved individuals, ultimately promoting more effective support and advocacy efforts. This conversation aims to discuss the practical understanding of carceral sensitivity within mental health practice, reentry initiatives, and research, focusing on humanity and respect. Perspectives from practitioners, researchers, and personal/familial experiences are crucial for navigating these complexities effectively.
