Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session
This roundtable discussion brings together PhD students specializing in intimate partner violence (IPV) to explore innovative approaches and perspectives in the field. The session will address key themes, including mental health strategies for researchers, community engagement, theoretical frameworks, and methodological advancements.
We will discuss maintaining positive mental health while working with distressing IPV data and highlight the importance of community involvement for meaningful engagement beyond academia. Theoretical perspectives will be explored, particularly the intersection of feminist and family violence frameworks, and the strengths and limitations of existing IPV typologies. The value of dyadic approaches in capturing unique risk factors across various gender dyads, including LGBTQ+ IPV, will be emphasized.
Longitudinal research and the necessity of continuously addressing IPV across the life course will be examined. We will also explore laypersons' thematic versus episodic framing of IPV based on gender and sexuality. Further, we will also cover the evolving public awareness and perceptions of IPV, now including emotional, psychological, financial, and tech-facilitated abuse. Lastly, we call for increased collaboration among IPV scholars to enhance professionalization within criminology and criminal justice.
This roundtable aims to foster a comprehensive understanding of IPV research and encourage collaborative efforts among emerging scholars to advance the field.
