Abstract/Description

This roundtable session will explore the unique experiences and challenges faced by peer mentors and tutors within a criminology department. As key components of the academic support system, peer mentors and tutors play a vital role in fostering a collaborative learning environment yet their experiences are often under-discussed. The session will include a diverse group of current peer mentors and tutors who will share their firsthand experiences, challenges, and successes in their roles. Key discussion points will include the impact of mentoring on both academic and personal development, strategies for effective tutoring, and the navigation of interpersonal dynamics with peers. Additionally, the roundtable will address institutional support structures for mentors and tutors, exploring how departments can enhance training programs, provide emotional and professional support, and recognize the contributions of these individuals. By focusing on these areas, the session intends to shed light on the essential yet often overlooked roles that peer mentors and tutors play in shaping the educational journey of students.
