Session Submission Summary

Roundtable: Graffiti as Practice, Graffiti as Research

Wed, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Sierra G - 5th Level

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract/Description

Graffiti has existed as the most visible sign of crime and disorder for over 50 years. However, the existing literature on graffiti is of unequal depth and from a variety of sources. This roundtable seeks to foster conversation and an exchange of ideas with a variety of people who study or are involved with graffiti. In addition to a number of scholars across various career stages and different disciplines, we will be joined by active and retired graffiti writers from the Bay Area including one of the co-founders of the first graffiti website, Art Crimes. Our hope is that by discussing various issues with existing research and concerns, we can identify fruitful areas of inquiry moving forward that the field of Criminology is uniquely poised to answer.
