Session Submission Summary

Roundtable: Teaching Victimization Topics with Trauma-Aware Techniques

Wed, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Salon 7 - Lower B2 Level - Area 3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract/Description

Teaching victimization topics in the classroom can be daunting in ways different than other areas of criminology, as many students and even instructors bring their own victimization histories into the classroom with them. This roundtable will discuss strategies for teaching various victimization topics, from child abuse to human trafficking to victimization in carceral settings and beyond, sharing tested and tried ideas for syllabi, content, and assignments. Classes that focus on victimization rather than offending often impact students differently, which may lead to struggles with content. Panelists will also provide trauma-informed teaching techniques for creating safe classrooms for survivors and non-survivors alike, as well as prepared to discuss concerns from newer instructors and veteran teachers alike.
