Roundtable: Trust Building: Strengthening Tribal Nations' Role in Public Safety Through Policy Advocacy and Community Partnerships

Wed, Nov 13, 8:00 to 9:20am, Salon 7 - Lower B2 Level - Area 3

Session Submission Type: Roundtable Session

Abstract/Description

This panel explores the current status of Indigenous tribal nations and emphasizes the importance of trust building and strengthening existing agreements through policy advocacy. We will examine how tribal nations’ interests often align with local communities and municipalities in addressing public safety concerns. Despite these common interests, tribal governments are frequently omitted from crucial conversations or included as an afterthought, possibly due to cultural misunderstandings. By prioritizing respect for tribal sovereignty in government-to-government relationships, positive outcomes can be achieved, enhancing public safety for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous populations. The panel will present legal history, tribal case studies, and current laws that may inform tribal and non-tribal stakeholders on building effective agreements and conducting respectful research through community partnerships founded on respect and trust. Additionally, we will discuss ongoing policy issues and the need for continued research, education, and training. This session underscores the importance of building and strengthening trust with tribal nations, demonstrating how these community partnerships contribute to overall public safety.
