Session Submission Type: Presidential Session
The constantly changing context in which academic teaching and learning unfolds requires us to consistently reflect on how best to respond to the challenges of our time, including resource limitations, threats to academic freedom, and the insertion of AI into our pedagogic routines and expectations for learners and how they learn. We are confronted with these challenges (and others) in the context of diverse student bodies and ideas about what constitutes good teaching. With this in mind, panelists will discuss current challenges and triumphs related to teaching amidst turbulent times. The discussion centers on how the interplay of the social, political, and educational climate have impacted panelists’ pedagogical approaches. Panelists will discuss topics related to the inclusion of current events in the classroom, the role of dialogue and communication in facilitating meaningful learning experiences, and how they account for technological shifts in the classroom. While panelists reflect on past examples of challenges and triumphs, they will offer insight into the future of education in criminology and cognate disciplines and advice on how to maneuver ongoing times of turmoil.
