Community-Oriented Policing (COP) in the Modern Era: Challenges and Technological Solutions

Thu, Nov 13, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Silver Linden - Second Floor

Abstract

Community-Oriented Policing (COP) has been a prominent policing philosophy in the United States for over four decades. While existing literature highlights the positive effects of COP in reducing the fear of crime, its impact on crime reduction remains inconclusive. Additionally, despite the increasing integration of the internet and relevant technologies into daily life, law enforcement agencies have been relatively slow to incorporate these advancements into their practices. This study examines the barriers to the effectiveness of COP in crime reduction by analyzing survey data collected from citizens participating in COP programs in a Midwestern city. Structural equation modeling will be employed for analysis. Policy-relevant information will be discussed, with a particular focus on how current technological advancements can enhance the effectiveness of COP in crime reduction.
