Poster #108 - Forced Marriage as a Manifestation of Honor-Based Violence: Good Practices From a South-Western European Region

Abstract

Forced marriage is a form of honor-based violence against women, inflicted by their own families, that has not yet been sufficiently addressed in South-Western European countries. This qualitative research, based on semi-structured interviews with eight key actors in Catalonia, a region in north-eastern Spain where this reality has been mostly addressed, identifies five good practices in the region’s victim-centered institutional, victim welfare, and police approach to forced marriage. These practices include protocolization at multiple levels of professional action, a specific victim intervention program involving key actors, and a proactive police approach. The research concludes with suggestions for improvements to facilitate their implementation in other regions in this part of Europe in order to enhance the prevention, detection, and response to this form of violence against young women and girls.
