Older people leave prison with vast challenges including the ability to secure a place to call home. The inability to secure housing can be attributed to numerous factors such as lack of social and familial support, lack of financial resources and opportunities for gainful employment, or declining health. Therefore the aim of this study was to understand what social service providers viewed as the most daunting challenges for older people to secure housing in the state of New Jersey. Drawing from two mini-focus groups, the constant comparison method and grounded theory were used to analyze service provider narratives on housing formerly incarcerated elderly people. Results reflected three main narratives including challenges in securing housing due to criminal history, the importance of service coordination to secure and maintain housing, and the need for tailored or individualized support, especially among the elderly formerly incarcerated population. Narratives highlighted the need for greater coordination in services and appropriate housing options. Policy implications are discussed.
