A Descriptive Study of Telephone Deception, Online Shopping Fraud and Online Crimes of Trust Violation in Hong Kong

Abstract

During the past decade, crimes such as online shopping fraud, hacking, romance scams, online dating and telephone deception have spiked exponentially. In 2020, there was a recorded loss of more than $150 million Hong Kong dollars, and these crimes have generated significant social harm. Relying on official data, this presentation addresses the following four areas: l) Characteristics of victims of telephone deception, online crimes of trust violation and online shopping fraud; 2) Whether the identified characteristics could help to prevent victims from telephone deception, online crimes of trust violation and online shopping fraud 3) Whether there are 'Power few' amongst victims of telephone deception, online crimes of trust violation and online shopping fraud; and 4) Measures that could enhance the prevention for victims.
