A Descriptive Outcome Evaluation of the Los Angeles County Intake Booking Diversion Program

Abstract

In February 2024, the Mental Evaluation Team (MET) of the Los Angeles County Sherriff’s Department (LASD) launched the Intake Booking Diversion program (IBD) in select stations across the county. IBD seeks to create pathways from jail to community-based treatment for individuals where there is a nexus between the alleged incident and an individual’s mental health needs. This formative implementation evaluation funded by the National Institute of Justice will use LASD administrative data to describe the characteristics of individuals who encountered IBD and their outcomes. We will also describe the outcomes of potentially eligible participants identified in comparison stations to inform the potential for IBD to impact the jail mental health population if it were taken to scale.
