Changes in the number of youth placed in residential facilities have important implications for how jurisdictions allocate resources and are an indicator of how the juvenile justice system responds to youth offending. This presentation draws on data from OJJDP’s Census of Juveniles in Residential Placement (CJRP) to examine trends and characteristics of youth in residential placement for violent crimes. Administered in odd-numbered years since 1997, the CJRP provides one-day counts of youth in residential placement who were charged with or adjudicated for an offense. It includes the youth’s demographic characteristics and placement status, the type of facility, and time in placement. This presentation will showcase trends in the number of youth in residential placement for violent crimes and the demographic characteristics of those held since 1997, around the historical peak for youth violence.
