The Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS) program in Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall aims to promote positive behavior and long-term change in youth attitudes, behaviors, and academic performance. Initially, youth progress was difficult to discern as data was recorded on paper and lacked aggregation. To address this issue, the Probation Department's IT team created a database for efficient data storage and interpretation. Data entry was streamlined to focus on key performance indicators such as location, time of day, and behavior type. Automated daily updates ensured staff had timely information despite frequent youth admits and releases.
A comprehensive dashboard was developed, utilizing both database and existing system data, to depict trends like the number of youths housed, and the effectiveness of PBIS usage. With the implementation of SB 823, the Secure Youth Treatment Facility (SYTF) was established, housing youth with different programmatic needs. We adapted the same database for both general and SYTF populations, classifying dashboard trends for better understanding. Positive feedback led to the implementation of this PBIS system at James Ranch, using a robust PowerApps cloud application. This iterative approach ensures continuous improvements and responsiveness to emerging changes, effectively providing rehabilitative support services to the youth in juvenile facilities.
