Critical Police Officer Perspectives about Job Stress and Resources in Colorado

Thu, Nov 13, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Gallaudet - M1

Abstract

The purpose of this qualitative study was to explore the perceptions of job stress and available resources among sworn police officers in Colorado. Using anonymous phone interviews, data were collected from officers throughout the state. A team of three researchers coded the data, employing thematic analysis to identify key themes. The analysis revealed four primary themes influencing officer experiences: post-George Floyd legislature, mental health, leadership accountability, and public perception. Findings highlight the impact of citizen-led legislative changes on policing, the barriers that prevent engagement with mental health resources, and the critical role of leadership in supporting officer well-being. The results of this study will be accessible to all law enforcement agencies in Colorado and are intended to inform policy decisions. By shedding light on these critical issues, this research aims to support funding for mental health and wellness programs while encouraging leadership accountability in improving officer support systems. These insights provide a foundation for enhancing the well-being of law enforcement personnel and fostering a more sustainable policing environment.
