The Interrelationships between Co-residence and Criminal Justice Contact and the Implications for Collateral Consequences

Wed, Nov 12, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Catholic University - M1

Abstract

Previous research indicates that individuals with criminal justice system contact often intend to rely on family support to shield them from collateral consequences of those contacts. This study examines the case of parental housing support around the time of criminal justice system involvement. First, it examines changes in co-residence with parents from pre- to post-criminal justice system involvement with attention to both the immediate post-contact period and longer-term co-residence outcomes. Second, it examines whether individuals who live with their parents following criminal justice system involvement are more likely to avoid subsequent contact with the criminal justice system. These questions are addressed using descriptive and within-person analyses of life history calendar data from the Rochester Youth Development Study. Implications for collateral consequences research are discussed.
