Precocious entry into adult roles can serve as a path into long-term negative outcomes over the life-course. In particular, precocious transitions have been linked to several educational, social, and behavioral consequences. The harms of early life transitions, however, vary substantially among youth. Accordingly, this study aims to examine heterogeneity in the effect of early transitions on later life outcomes. This research uses data from the Rochester Youth Development Study (RYDS) and propensity-based methods to assess how the developmental impacts of precocious transitions differ according to youths’ risk of entering adult roles and responsibilities at a young age. The implications of the findings for studying the heterogeneous impacts of life-course transitions on development are discussed.
