Gun violence contributes an enormous burden to deaths and injuries in the United States. Although there is a robust literature on factors associated with adolescent gun-carrying, relatively few studies have examined longitudinal patterns of gun-carrying – and even fewer have examined longitudinal patterns across two generations. Prior research suggests family factors such as parental disengagement are linked to adolescent firearm carriage. The goal of the present study is to estimate trajectories of gun-carrying in two generations and identify family/parenting factors associated with continuity and discontinuity in intergenerational gun-carrying. Results of this research will provide information on risk/protective factors for firearm carrying and potential areas of intervention.
