Examining the Latest Local Jail Incarceration Trends: Insights from the 2024 Census of Jails

Abstract

The Bureau of Justice Statistics (BJS) will present key findings from the 2024 Census of Jails, offering a comprehensive look at the latest incarceration trends. This session will explore shifts in local jail populations, demographic patterns, incarceration status, admissions and average lengths of stay, as well as facility capacity and staffing challenges. Additionally, BJS will introduce two upcoming interactive web tools: the Annual Jail Report, which will examine a decade of national jail trends, and the Jail Data Dashboard, which will provide local jail data at the county, city, and state levels, featuring dynamic visualizations in an accessible format. These resources will enhance public access to vital jail statistics, empowering researchers and stakeholders with the most up-to-date data for analysis.
