BJS recently conducted the latest iteration of the Survey of Inmates in Local Jails (SILJ), the only national source of detailed information on the characteristics of jail inmates. The SILJ collected information on a variety of important topics, including education, work experience, military service, family background, current and prior charges, physical and mental health conditions, drug and alcohol use, and experiences in jail and use of jail programs through in-person interviews with jail inmates across the United States. This presentation will provide detail on information collected in the 2024 SILJ, as well as a discussion on how the SILJ data can be used by researchers and stakeholders to inform policies, practices, and research.
