This presentation will highlight findings from the 2024 Annual Survey of Jails in Indian Country, a data collection that has been conducted in confinement facilities, detention centers, jails, and other facilities operated by tribal authorities or the Bureau of Indian Affairs since 1998. This data collection provides insights into the population housed in Indian country jails, as well as facility characteristics and staffing composition. This presentation will examine trends in the Indian country jail population, including any changes in demographics, conviction status, and offense types. Additional information will be presented on staffing patterns, along with facility capacity and population levels. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the characteristics and trends shaping Indian country jails today.
