Teaching Activist Research Methods to Students and Community Organizers

Wed, Nov 12, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marquis Salon 2 - M2

Abstract

This presentation explores innovative approaches to teaching activist research methods in criminology and social science, emphasizing rigor, methodological pluralism, and community engagement. Clearly distinct from ideologically-driven research, activist research as presented here adheres strictly to established social science methodological principles, leveraging qualitative depth and quantitative precision through advanced mixed-methods designs. Drawing upon practical experience with Campaign Zero's policy reform initiatives addressing police misuse of search warrants and protest management, this session highlights participatory action research (PAR). PAR empowers communities as active collaborators, enabling them to produce credible, data-driven insights for impactful policy outcomes. The session addresses pedagogical strategies and ethical considerations essential for conducting rigorous and socially relevant activist research.
