High-Impact Practices and Experiential Learning

Thu, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Independence Salon F - M4

Abstract

(a) Objective: Experiential learning is a powerful educational approach that prepares students for success by integrating academic learning with practical experience. High-Impact Practices (HIPs) are a set of educational practices designed to engage students in active learning and provide them with meaningful, real-world experiences. HIPs include experiences like internships, service-learning, undergraduate research, and senior capstones. This session will provide an overview of HIPs and their essential elements as well as the scholarly evidence surrounding their efficacy in promoting student success. (b) Data/Methods: Data and results from the National Survey of Student Engagement (NSSE) and institutional data from several universities will be presented to show overall student engagement and success in HIPs. (c) Results: Empirical research shows these practices, when done well, promote increased levels of student engagement, retention, and success. However, this same research also shows equity gaps in student engagement, participation, and completion, with students who stand to benefit most also being the least likely to participate. (d) Conclusions/Implications: Overall, engaged learning is a powerful educational approach that prepares students for success by integrating academic learning with practical experience. These experiences are only high-impact when done well, and only when there is broad and equitable access for students.
