Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs)

Thu, Nov 13, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Independence Salon F - M4

Abstract

(a) Objective: Course-Based Undergraduate Research Experiences (CUREs) are an innovative educational practice that integrates research into the undergraduate curriculum, providing students with hands-on research opportunities within a course setting. CUREs engage students in authentic research projects that are inclusive, offering all students, regardless of their background or prior research experience, the chance to participate in meaningful research activities that cultivate critical thinking, problem-solving, and scientific inquiry skills. CUREs include the development of research questions, data collection and analysis, and the dissemination of findings. Students often work collaboratively in teams to explore novel research questions and contribute to the generation of new knowledge. (b) Data/Methods: N/A. (c) Results: The presenter will share the essential elements of CUREs, examples of CURE implementation, and strategies for assessing student learning and impact. The presenter will also share how they have used CUREs to create high-quality, real-world learning experiences for students in their criminology, sociology, and criminal justice courses. (d) Conclusions/Implications: CUREs represent a powerful approach to integrating research into undergraduate education, enriching the learning experience, and fostering a culture of inquiry and discovery. This approach enhances students' understanding of the scientific process and fosters a sense of ownership and engagement in their learning.
