Prior research indicates positive credentials can improve perceptions of hireability for applicants with criminal records. However, it is currently unclear whether evidence of accomplishments obtained through community supervision organizations improves hiring preferences. Our team is collaborating with a community-based reentry organization to test whether documentation of a cognitive behavioral therapy program, a letter of recommendation (LoR) from a program supervisor, or a LoR from a probation/parole officer provide meaningful signals of desistance or employability, and whether effects vary by the applicant's gender. Findings from this survey experiment will inform the community partner’s employment readiness programming strategy and provide further insight into whether evidence of accomplishments that are connected to the criminal justice system are useful signals or potentially reinforce stigma.
