Using Participatory Action Research to Engage with Women Impacted by the Criminal Legal System: Lessons Learned and Future Directions

Wed, Nov 12, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Gallaudet - M1

Abstract

Very few studies have used community engaged/participatory action research methods with women impacted by the criminal legal system. As such, this presentation will provide an overview of community engaged research methods and the need to engage in such research with women using trauma-informed methods that center gender and intersectionality. The presentation will discuss practical and institutional barriers (i.e., funding, IRB approval) with suggestions on how to overcome them. Lastly, the presentation will end with future directions, examples that can be applied to PAR with women, and resources to learn more about community engaged methods.
