Community reentry upon prison release is a precarious period too often ending in reincarceration or other adverse life events. Successful reentry is even more complex for men exiting long (10+ years) prison sentences. Such men are likely to have diminished social capital to restart their lives, even if they have aged beyond their criminal pasts. In this presentation, we introduce a longitudinal mixed methods design that merges egocentric network panel data collected using Network Canvas with narrative interviews focused on reentrants’ anticipated, dissolved, and shifting social ties and support resources. With a case study example, we demonstrate how this approach elucidates the structure, expectations, struggles, and opportunities surrounding reentrants’ social networks in the months immediately following long-term prison release.
