Ethnicity and Desistance: Evidence from the UK about how 'race' shapes processes of desistance

Wed, Nov 12, 2:00 to 3:20pm, Liberty Salon O - M4

Abstract

This paper reports on the first round of data collection (of two) with men and women being supervised by a probation area in England. The sample has three subsamples; 'white' British and Irish people; 'Black' British people (of either Caribbean or African descent) and Asian British people (of Bangladeshi, Indian or Pakistani descent). The project aims to assess the extent to which the cultural values, socio-economic positions and religion shape processes of desistance. Crucial to our understanding of desistance and how it is shaped, is a consideration of previous experiences of the criminal justice system and the wider socio-economic position of these subsamples within the context of the city in which they live (Leeds, West Yorkshire, England).
