While there has been a dramatic increase in the study of misinformation, there is not a consensus on exactly what it is. This has led to debates in both the academic and lay communities regarding whether or not misinformation is a “problem”. We identify differences between objective and subjective definitions of misinformation and argue that, using a subjective definition, misinformation is a social problem in the sociological sense. We map the study of misinformation to the steps of the social problem process and explore misinformation as a wicked social problem. We conclude by discussing the implications of considering misinformation as a social problem.
