The American correctional system is strongly rooted in punishment of offenders and deterrence of future wrongdoing. While both the general and specific deterrence of offenders has experienced limited success in reducing offending and recidivism, deterrence has been implemented differently in international correctional contexts. This project uses case studies along the spectrum of deterrence to explore its utility in various settings and unpack differences in successful implementation of deterrence-based policy and practice.
