Although the majority of individuals within the criminal justice system are serving their sentence in the community, the research has primarily examined the collateral consequences of mass incarceration. Considering the pervasiveness of probation, it is critical to understand how being on misdemeanor probation impacts life outcomes for individuals. Probation officers work closely with clients by conducting regular check-ins, ensuring compliance with conditions of probation, and connecting them to treatment or other resources. Officers have large amounts of discretion over clients, so it is important to understand how they evaluate the collateral consequences of misdemeanor probation. We examine these perspectives through a survey of probation officers (N=46 officers). Findings indicate that there is significant variation in officer perceptions of collateral consequences by professional characteristics (e.g., size of caseload, tenure in CJS), officer training, levels of discretion, and officer supervision style. These findings may provide valuable insights for Florida misdemeanor probation agencies, helping to refine probation processes and ensure that resources are better aligned with the needs of the population.
