The School to Prison Nexus for Deaf Students

• In Event: An Examination of Social and Legal Policies and their Impact in the Deaf Community

Abstract

Schools often miss the mark with regard to ADA education. Most Deaf students graduate with limited language skills and a serious lack of education about their rights under ADA. This creates a nexus point in which Deaf youth are at much higher risk for arrest and incarceration. This presentation will address how these variables combine to form a nexus that contributes to an overrepresentation of Deaf people in the justice system.
