Preliminary Findings From the 2024 KC Community Survey

Fri, Nov 14, 12:30 to 1:50pm, Supreme Court - M4

Abstract

We introduce the 2024 Kansas City Community Survey and share preliminary findings from it. Kansas City continues to report high violent crime rates, including fatal and non-fatal shooting incidents. Unlike many other cities, these incidents have not declined in recent years. Meanwhile, the city has hosted several prominent crime prevention and deterrence strategies, such as the classic Kansas City patrol experiment, ongoing focused deterrence programs, a Cure Violence model, and other community-engaged initiatives. However, no comprehensive survey had previously measured how residents experience violence or view these efforts. Our survey follows common community survey practices but takes an important additional step by involving community members in the data collection process. We gathered responses from 460 participants and addressed key theoretical and practical questions in criminology and criminal justice. We will present our data collection strategy and preliminary findings.
