The Defiance among Offenders under the Sex Offender Registration Law and their Perception of Recidivism

Wed, Nov 12, 3:30 to 4:50pm, Mint - M4

Abstract

This study was conducted to investigate the factors affecting the perception of recidivism by targeting the offenders under the sex offender registration law in Korea. Specifically, we explored the effect of the defiance factors of the offenders on their perception of recidivism, and whether the negative social experiences after disclosure of personal information played a mitigating role in the relationship between these variables. According to the results, it was found that the higher the bond between the subject and the probation officer, the lower the perception of recidivism possibility. On the other hand, it was found that the unfairness of punishment, the stigma of punishment, and the shame caused by punishment did not significantly affect the perception of recidivism. Based on these results, policy suggestions were discussed.
