Tribal Juvenile Justice, Dependency, and Indian Child Welfare Act Matters: Improving Law Enforcement, Court and Jails data on the youth

Wed, Nov 12, 11:00am to 12:20pm, Marquis Salon 4 - M2

Abstract

There is a paucity of reliable and timely data on tribal juvenile justice, dependency, and Indian Child Welfare Act matter handled in tribal courts across the U.S. The Tribal Law and Order Act of 2010 requires BJS to establish and implement a tribal crime data collection system. BJS is developing the next Census of Tribal Law Enforcement Agencies and Census of Tribal Court Systems, with a priority focus on improving tribal juvenile justice, youth, and family court related data to support tribal justice system programs. This presentation will discuss data needs, recruitment and consultation strategies with tribes, and questionnaire improvements.
