Poster #139 - It’s Me Luigi! The Social Media Coverage of Luigi Mangione

Thu, Nov 13, 6:30 to 7:20pm, Marquis Salon 5 - M2

Abstract

This study conducts a content analysis on the hypersexualization and romanticism of Luigi Mangione, the alleged murderer of Brian Thompson, CEO of UnitedHealthcare, on December 4, 2024, in New York City. In the aftermath of the crime, public discourse, particularly on social media, has shifted from a focus on the violent nature of the act to a sensationalized portrayal of Mangione. Drawing on cultural criminology, this research examines how Mangione has been depicted across various media outlets. The study categorizes key themes, including imagery, sexualized language, and narratives that romanticize his actions, to assess how these portrayals shape public perceptions of crime and justice. By analyzing media content, this research aims to highlight the broader societal implications of sensationalized true crime culture, particularly its role in distorting perceptions of violent offenders. Findings from this study can contribute to discussions on media responsibility and the ethical considerations of crime reporting in the digital age.
