Understanding Adult Perspectives on Parental Responsibility When Children Commit Crimes: Implications for Policy and Practice

Fri, Nov 14, 3:30 to 4:50pm, George Washington - M1

Abstract

Using survey methodology, this study examines whether parents should be held liable for the crimes committed by their children. It examines the factors that influence public opinion, including legal, moral, and social considerations. It uses a survey instrument to collect data from 107 adults on parental responsibility and culpability for their children’s criminal behavior. Results reveal that the majority of the respondents agree that parents play a significant role in preventing juvenile crime. They are entrusted with the responsibility to provide guidance and nurturance to their children so that they stay away from crime. However, a majority (55%) did not attribute any criminal liability to the parents. Results varied by the age of the child and the severity of the crime. No significant differences were discerned by socioeconomic status, cultural background, race, or ethnicity.
